Would you trade your soul mate for your soul?
A Shadowhunter’s life is bound by duty. Constrained by honor. The word of a Shadowhunter is a solemn pledge, and no vow is more sacred than the vow that binds parabatai, warrior partners—sworn to fight together, die together, but never to fall in love.
Emma Carstairs has learned that the love she shares with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, isn’t just forbidden—it could destroy them both. She knows she should run from Julian. But how can she when the Blackthorns are threatened by enemies on all sides?
Their only hope is the Black Volume of the Dead, a spell book of terrible power. Everyone wants it. Only the Blackthorns can find it. Spurred on by a dark bargain with the Seelie Queen, Emma; her best friend, Cristina; and Mark and Julian Blackthorn journey into the Courts of Faerie, where glittering revels hide bloody danger and no promise can be trusted. Meanwhile, rising tension between Shadowhunters and Downworlders has produced the Cohort, an extremist group of Shadowhunters dedicated to registering Downworlders and “unsuitable” Nephilim. They’ll do anything in their power to expose Julian’s secrets and take the Los Angeles Institute for their own.
When Downworlders turn against the Clave, a new threat rises in the form of the Lord of Shadows—the Unseelie King, who sends his greatest warriors to slaughter those with Blackthorn blood and seize the Black Volume. As dangers close in, Julian devises a risky scheme that depends on the cooperation of an unpredictable enemy. But success may come with a price he and Emma cannot even imagine, one that will bring with it a reckoning of blood that could have repercussions for everyone and everything they hold dear.
Julian to Emma: “I A-M R-U-I-N-E-D”
This has to be one of the best books Cassandra Clare has brought to us! My heart is a shattered mess on the pages and I just have a lot feelings right now.
There were so MANY marvelous aspects that need to be addressed:
I thoroughly enjoyed Ty in Lady Midnight and exploring his character even more in this book warmed my heart. He is so kind and he is all about solving problems with Livvy and Kit. Their little trio was intriguing to read about and I am definitely aboard the Ty and Kit ship. They are so in-sync with each other and they help each other in ways that no one else could when it comes to terms with their own personal concerns. (I just adored how Ty helped Kit become more accepting as his role toward being a Shadowhunter!)

● Blossoming New Relationships ✓
Every single character connection captured my attention. Blackthorns siblings interacting together is bound to bring laughter or tears and Lord of Shadows delivered all the family feels. THE WORLD DOES NOT DESERVE JULIAN BLACKTHORN. Julian has quickly become one of my favorite Shadowhunters with his dedication to protect his loved ones.
Emma and Christina’s friendship showed just how far they were willing to go for each other when one needs advice or someone to seek a bit of revenge on their behalf. Five words. FIRE. ANTS. IN. THE. PANTS.
Then there is the Emma and Julian dynamic of forbidden love that tears the heart to pieces. The stakes have reached new heights than ever. It’s not just Julian and Emma’s bond that is at risk if they continue to love each other romantically. My jaw dropped to the floor after Julian reveals what he found out in Faerie! Also is it me or did Julian seem to have some of the most awe-inspiring quotes???
“Break my heart,” he said. “Break it in pieces. I give you permission.”
Bonus: Cassandra released an extended NSFW Cabin Scene on Tumblr so be sure to check it out here!
Also I am not sure about my feelings for the Christina x Mark x Kieran situation. Who I am supposed to ship in this situation??? I love them all as individuals and from the way it seems anyone is fair game. I am so conflicted. My heart is being tugged in different directions. Help.
Also there were new interesting relationships that appear to be developing. Honestly considering how well Cassandra has written her characters I am all for exploring how these new connections unfold!
Lord of Shadows brought out so much diversity! I won’t say which character is transgender, but hearing their backstory tugs at the heartstrings and brings to light so many issues that were hinted at throughout their storyline! (I also was so happy that their love interest accepted them for who they are regardless of their past.)
There were all sorts of little gems sprinkled into Lord of Shadows pertaining to the previous books/series.
Jace and Clary make a little cameo. Magnus makes a glorious appearance. And be prepared to travel down memory lane when the characters travel to London.
“There were valuable first editions of books in the enormous library, most of them had been scribbled in by some idiot named Will H.”
My heart still has not recovered after that last chapter. I had to read the pages again and again, because I was in complete disbelief as to what happened. The worst part? THE CLIFFHANGER. Cassandra didn’t just leave us with one – oh no she pretty much pulled pushed me over the proverbial cliff and into a dark abyss of emotions!!! Now we have to wait TWO years for the sequel?!?!
What did you think about you about the ending of LoS? Did you shed any tears? I know I was in a pool of emotional sorrow by the last chapter!
